What is JEPQ?

JEPQ is an actively managed ETF that holds a portfolio of large-cap growth stocks broadly similar to the Nasdaq-100, while also selling (writing) call options on the index. Selling those options generates additional income, which the fund distributes to shareholders, generally on a monthly basis.

How the strategy works

A covered call, or option-income, strategy trades away some potential upside in exchange for collected option premiums. If the underlying stocks rise sharply, JEPQ may not fully participate in those gains because of the options sold against the portfolio. In exchange, it aims to generate a steadier income stream, including in flat or declining markets.

Risks and considerations

JEPQ remains exposed to the downside of its underlying stock holdings — the options overlay generates income but does not eliminate equity market risk. Because it is actively managed rather than tracking a published index, its holdings and options positioning can change over time based on the manager's decisions. Distributions can vary and may include return of capital, which is not the same as investment income.

Long-term investing considerations

An option-income fund behaves differently from a simple index fund, particularly during strong bull markets, where capped upside can mean lower total returns than an uncapped index fund. Investors considering JEPQ often weigh its income focus against funds like QQQ that offer full participation in the underlying index's price movement.
