What is JEPI?

JEPI is an actively managed ETF that combines a portfolio of US large-cap stocks, selected with an emphasis on lower volatility, with equity-linked notes that provide options-based income similar to a covered call strategy. Together, these aim to produce a steady monthly income stream alongside partial exposure to US stock market movements.

How the strategy works

Rather than simply holding an index, JEPI's managers select stocks they view as offering attractive risk-adjusted characteristics, and layer options income on top through equity-linked notes. As with any covered-call-style strategy, this approach tends to reduce participation in sharp market rallies in exchange for more consistent income during flatter or declining periods.

Risks and considerations

JEPI still carries US equity market risk, and its actively managed, lower-volatility stock selection can perform differently from the broader S&P 500 in either direction. Its options overlay introduces additional complexity, and distributions can vary month to month and may include return of capital.

Long-term investing considerations

JEPI is often compared with broad index funds like VOO or IVV by income-focused investors, but the two behave quite differently: JEPI trades some capital-appreciation potential for income and lower volatility, while a plain index fund offers full participation in the S&P 500 without an income overlay.
