What is QQQ?
QQQ, formally Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1, tracks the Nasdaq-100 index of 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange. Like SPY, it is organized as a unit investment trust (UIT) rather than a more modern open-end fund structure.
How QQQ compares
Unlike the S&P 500 ETFs on this site, QQQ tracks a different, narrower index that excludes financial companies and has historically carried substantial exposure to large technology businesses. Its very high average daily trading volume also makes it a popular instrument in options markets, alongside long-term investors who hold it directly.
Risks and considerations
Because the Nasdaq-100 is concentrated in a relatively small number of large, often technology-oriented companies, QQQ can be more sensitive to changes in sentiment toward that sector than a broader, more diversified fund. It carries the same general market risk as any equity fund, with no guarantee against loss.
Long-term investing considerations
