What is Berkshire Hathaway?
Berkshire Hathaway is a holding company that wholly owns a range of businesses, including GEICO (insurance), BNSF Railway and Berkshire Hathaway Energy, along with numerous manufacturing, retail and service subsidiaries. Alongside these operating businesses, it holds a large portfolio of minority equity stakes in other public companies.
Why investors watch Berkshire Hathaway
Because its operating businesses span insurance, transportation, energy and industrials, Berkshire is sometimes viewed as a proxy for the broader US economy. The company has historically retained earnings and reinvested them, or used them for share buybacks, rather than paying a regular dividend.
