What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a digital asset recorded on a decentralized public ledger. Its protocol defines a limited issuance schedule, while its market price is determined by buyers and sellers across exchanges around the world.

Bitcoin does not represent ownership in a company and does not generate business earnings. Access may involve direct custody, an exchange, or a regulated product, each with different fees, tax treatment and operational risks.

Volatility and large price swings

Crypto assets can experience rapid and substantial price changes. Bitcoin has gone through periods of large gains, deep declines and prolonged recoveries. A short chart window can hide that wider range of outcomes.

Volatility affects more than the final return. It can influence whether an investor is able and willing to remain invested, especially when a position is large relative to the rest of a portfolio. Liquidity, custody, regulation, technology and market structure also introduce risks that a simple return calculator cannot capture.

Long-term return scenarios

A scenario calculator can show how a hypothetical average return would affect a lump sum or recurring contributions. It cannot predict Bitcoin's future price or reproduce an uneven sequence of gains and losses.

Because small changes in an assumed return compound into very different results, test conservative, moderate and adverse cases. Include fees and taxes where relevant, and do not treat past performance as a guaranteed future rate.

Regular contributions

Dollar-cost averaging spreads purchases across multiple dates and prices. It can support a consistent process, but it does not guarantee a lower average cost, a profit or protection from a sustained decline. The appropriate contribution level depends on personal circumstances and risk tolerance.
