What is ASML?

ASML Holding, based in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, designs and manufactures photolithography systems used by chipmakers to print circuit patterns onto silicon wafers. It is the leading supplier of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, a technology required to manufacture the most advanced computer chips.

Its customers include the world's largest chip manufacturers, who rely on ASML's equipment to produce processors used in phones, computers, data centers and other electronics.

Why investors watch ASML

ASML occupies a highly specialized position in the global semiconductor supply chain, with very few competitors able to produce equipment of similar capability. Investors often treat its order backlog and equipment shipments as a signal for capital spending across the broader chip industry.

Risks and volatility

Semiconductor equipment spending is cyclical and can slow sharply when chipmakers pull back on capital investment. ASML's business is also exposed to export restrictions on advanced technology to certain countries, customer concentration among a small number of large chipmakers, and a valuation that can be sensitive to changes in growth expectations.

Long-term investing considerations
