What is Alphabet?

Alphabet is the parent company of Google, whose core businesses include Google Search, YouTube and the Android operating system. It also operates Google Cloud, a cloud infrastructure and enterprise software business, along with a collection of early-stage ventures grouped as “Other Bets.”

Alphabet trades under two share classes, GOOGL and GOOG, which differ mainly in voting rights rather than economic ownership.

Why investors watch Alphabet

Search and YouTube advertising represent the majority of Alphabet's revenue, making the business sensitive to the broader digital advertising cycle. Google Cloud has grown into a meaningful third pillar alongside advertising. Alphabet began paying a dividend in 2024 in addition to ongoing share buybacks.

Risks and volatility

Alphabet faces antitrust and regulatory scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions related to its search and advertising businesses, along with competitive pressure in search, cloud and AI-related products. Advertising revenue is also sensitive to broader economic conditions.

Long-term investing considerations

As with any single company, Alphabet's results can diverge significantly from a diversified benchmark in either direction. Use a range of assumptions when projecting long-term outcomes rather than a single company's historical growth rate.
